Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge 2022 Regional Competition

About Concrete Canoe

Concrete canoe is a student competition team at MSOE apart of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) Student Chapter. Concrete canoe offers students an opportunity to apply knowledge learned in classes into making a full-size (20 ft) concrete canoe. The MSOE Concrete Canoe team has placed in the top 5 since 2016 and with their most recent first place finish in the 2021 regional competition.

About Steel Bridge

Every year we design and fabricate a 20+ foot long bridge based on a set of design criteria from AISC that is new every year. Everything is hand cut and welded and broken into smaller pieces that we then race against other teams to see who can build their bridge the fastest. The bridges are then compared based on different criteria such as aesthetics, how well the bridge holds load and how efficiently we built it.

Past Achievements

  • Both competition teams have consistently placed in the top 5 since 2016
  • Concrete canoe placed first in 2021 regional competition
  • Steel bridge placed first in 2017 regional competition
  • Second place finishes in the following mini competitions: concrete cornhole, wooden bridge, and sustainable solutions

2022 Regional Competition

The 2022 regional competition is at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign from April 7th to April 9th. At the regional competition concrete canoe and steel bridge will compete against 19 other universities. Aside from the two main competitions there are other smaller competitions where MSOE students and use their knowledge to apply it to real world applications. This competition also gives students the opportunity to meet with other universities and talk about their approach to concrete canoe, steel bridge, and other small competitions.

Support Needed

While the CAECM department will provide some support in attending the Regional Competition, both teams rely on monetary donations as the main source of income to offset the cost of attending. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to offset the cost of transportation, hotel, food, and registration fees. With your support, both teams will have the ability to send 25 students to the 2022 Regional Competition. Help our teams get to the Regional Competition with a gift to this project. No amount is too small and every gift will be greatly appreciated. We are excited to keep you updated along the design and construction process of the concrete canoe and steel bridge. Thank you for your support!

With appreciation,
